The Zanzibar Hotel The Zanzibar Hotel was the first, and for many years, the only hotel on Zanzibar (where I stayed with my parents when my Father took up his post as Assistant Commissioner of Customs, a long time ago!). Following the Revolution of 1964 the building (originally built in the late 1800s) was taken over by the Government and feel in to a very poor state. Over the last few years the building has been painstakingly restored to its former grandeur with high beamed ceilings, marble floors and a large courtyard garden. Beyt Al Chai For those who want to experience the charm of a classic African setting with a touch of ancient Arabian mystique, the place is Beyt al Chai. | Gemma Del Est This is by far the largest resort in Zanzibar, not only because they have the most rooms, but also the vast space over which it is situated. Gemma is located on the North West coast of Zanzibar, near to Kendwa Rocks, on a magnificent stretch of beach. The beauty of this side of the island is that it is not as affected as the East by the tidal fluctuations. You are able to swim during low and high tide. Even though they have a great beach, they went and built the most massive swimming pool on the island with a sunken bar on the northern end where you are able to enjoy cocktails. The hotel has been styled on a modern European style, ignoring the Zanzibar style, in which most other resorts have been built. Large white plastic tarpaulins greet you as you enter the main gate, something you might expect to see in Milan. The restaurant area is beautifully decorated using glass windows and water features, all very chic and modern. One of the most stunning features of the resort is the large entertainment area built on a pontile out in the ocean. The jetty just out some 100m into the ocean and provides a stunning place to enjoy cocktails during the day, sundowners at sunset or a late night drink. From the deck in the evening, you can watch the fish swimming in the floodlit ocean. |

Ras Nungwi This is by far the best place to stay in the Nungwi area. Ras Nungwi was one of the first hotels to be established on Zanzibar, so the owners managed to secure one of the prime sites on the island, away from the main village. The white, sandy beach is idyllic and it’s long enough to spread out and find your own spot to sunbathe. It is also just about the only resort along the eastern side of the Nungwi peninsula, which means you have the luxury of quiet beaches. This hotel is one of the best choices for big game fishers, divers, kitesurfers and honeymooners. Ras Nungwi is a large, professionally run resort with a swimming pool (the only one in the Nungwi area), a slick dive and deep-sea fishing operation and all the watersport facilities you could wish for in a beach resort. We were impressed with the friendly and efficient staff. |

Amaan Kendwa Beach Resort Located on the North Coast of Zanzibar, Amaan Kendwa Resort is one of the newest in the area. Kendwa is noted for it’s long magnificent beaches and very laid back atmosphere. Being quite new, the landscaping of the place still needs a bit of attention. The lodge has been built in stages down a mild slope, with the reception area at the top, then a couple of sea view rooms facing out on to the ocean. The standard rooms have been built in a U-shape facing out on to the gardens, and the balance of the sea view rooms located closest to the beach. The garden rooms are located some 50m or so from the beach. The lodge is very comfortable, and the sort of place where you come and go as you please. There are no formalities, just a hassle-free kind of place. |

| Nungwi Village Beach Resort If you're looking for a place to put up your feet, relax and feel at home, Nungwi Village Beach Resort is a good choice. This superb little lodge is situated on a lovely strip of coastline just outside Nungwi Village in the north. The atmosphere is calm with dhows plying the azure waters in front of you. Sandy walkways with fishing-basket lights link the reception to the restaurant and bar. The layout and all the makuti thatch gives the place a lovely village feel. There's an open-air bar and on some nights acrobats perform after dinner. On quiet nights, if you do feel like socializing with a lively crowd, you can walk down to a variety of pubs and restaurants further along the beach. Nungwi attracts a host of tourists, backpackers and hippies, who gather here. The restaurants are all quite attractive with makuti-thatch roofs and a selection of pizza, pasta and seafood on the menu. If you're after a special type of fish, order it the day before or early in the morning so the chef can tell the fishermen what to catch. Some of restaurants are right on the beach, others are on the rocky headland. There are sometimes impromptu, moonlit drumming sessions on the beach. Just be careful walking about on your own late at night. |

Mnarani Beach Cottages If you're after a small, intimate and reasonably priced lodge on the quieter flank of the Nungwi Peninsula, Mnarani Beach Cottages is a great option. The bungalows are nestled privately in a cove near the lighthouse on the tip of Nungwi. Divers will appreciate its reasonable proximity to the Mnemba Atoll (just less than two hours away) and for part-time partygoers the lively bars and restaurants of Nungwi are just a 20-minute walk away. There is a fantastic sandy beach where you can laze about on sun lounges and develop that long-awaited golden tan. But the beach quality does vary according to the tides and time of year, so there may be times when you need to walk a short distance to the western side of the peninsula to find a better beach to swim. We didn't find this too much of a drawback though. |

Amaan Bungalows This is where it all happens in Nungwi. After burning down two years ago, the owners have restored the place to almost its original state, with the exception of a couple of new additions and nicer rooms. If you are looking to be at the centre of all the action in Nungwi, then this is definitely the place to be. The place is full of vibey younger people. They have a huge array of facilities from a dive shop to an internet cafe to a boutique. You could actually just stay here and not go anywhere else if you liked, as it is all here. |

| Smiles Beach Hotel Smiles is all about enjoying the simple pleasures in life: long carefree days on the beach, awesome sunsets, the sound of the ocean and watching local village life going by. If you're after a big bustling beach resort where you're ll have constant entertainment look elsewhere. This small and casual 16-roomed guesthouse doesn't have much in the way of activities or facilities, although they might organise the occasional dinner show on a moonlit night. At Smiles, there are just the guest rooms and a tiny restaurant. No reception office, games room, lounge, curio shop, disco or pub. However, Smiles Beach Hotel's setting in the party hub of Nungwi means that you're close to a number of festive bars and restaurants so those nights of wild fruit cocktails are just a five minute walk away (or a little longer if you're prone to post-cocktail zigzagging on the way home). You can then spend the following day quietly curled up with a good book under the palms. |

| Baobab Beach Bungalows Baobab Beach Bungalows is located in Nungwi, south of the Nungwi Village and the main hub near Amaan Bungalows. The layout of the lodge is a bit awkward. The main reception area is located very far back in the lodge, then they have built the lodge in a U-shape facing out towards the ocean. There is a large area of landscaped garden between the two sides and it looks like the lodge goes on for miles and miles. There is method in their madness, as it gives a nice feeling of tranquility not having your neighbors right on top of you. The restaurant area is fantastic, located on the beach front, and situated on one of the prettiest stretches of beach in the area. Guests are able to enjoy fantastic views of the ocean whilst enjoying meals or cocktails served in the bar area. They have also recently included a conference centre, which is very well priced. We would be able to arrange conferences for you of up to 70 people at the hotel. Please ask one of our sales staff for more details. We find the staff to be very friendly, particularly the management, and we could see how this filtered down the ranks. The area and location is ideal as you are suitably far away from the noise. The lodge is perfectly situated if you want some peace and quiet and is sufficiently close and within walking distance to the multitude of shops, restaurants, bars and dive centers in Nungwi. |

Ocean Paradise, Zanzibar Ocean Paradise Resort. Roll that over your tongue and picture an image. Thinking of endless beaches, dazzling blue oceans and havens of coconut palms with all the comforting luxuries of a sumptuous beach resort? The name really does capture the essence of this enchanting place. When we first visited the construction site of this brand new hotel it was clear that a simply idyllic location had been chosen. We were therefore delighted to find, on our subsequent visits, that the finished Ocean Paradise Resort far exceeded our expectations. This big international-style resort is situated in a 6,5 hectare palm grove and fronted by a magnificent stretch of coastline on Zanzibar's beautiful northeast coast. The beautiful gardens have been landscaped using indigenous trees and plants to attract the various bird species on the island. It's a place where your dreams of romantic holidays in paradise with your loved one can literally come true |

Zanzibar Safari Club Zanzibar Safari Club is a magical beachfront resort, situated on the picturesque East Coast of Zanzibar, in the Uroa area. It is approximately 35km (40 minutes) from Stone Town and easily reached by road. The Club is situated amidst a 6 acre tropical garden and prides itself in its beautiful location, once described by David Livingstone as "paradise" (and it's easy to see why). Our first encounter with Zanzibar Safari Club was when we approached its colourful gates. The staff informed us that the gates's name was Marhaba - meaning ‚"welcome". The hotel successfully combines international levels of hospitality with the local lifestyle of the island, and what you end up with is true Zanzibarian warmth. Come enjoy this silver-sand haven- we highly recommend it! |

| Zamani Kempinski, Zanzibar The Zamani Kempinski hotel is the latest in the internationally renowned Kempinski family and only just opened in December 2005. Needless to say - everything is brand new and of the best and most contemporary quality and style. The hotel is located on the East Coast of Zanzibar and is easily reached by road, although the last 2km or so is on dirt road and a bit rough. The Kempinski hotels have always been popular banquet and conference venues, and the Zamani Kempinski isn't any different. The air-conditioned facilities are ideal for small meetings, receptions, seminars and conferences as they include top of the range audiovisual and telecommunication equipment, superb service and great catering by the hotel's dedicated chefs. These facilities can host up to 50 guests. The staff at Zamani Kempinski are multi-lingual and extremely professional, ensuring your utmost comfort. Something worth mentioning is the hotel's great concierge service. While many hotels the world over have started to down-scale this aspect of hospitality, the Kempinski group still prides itself on their well trained concierge staff. Everything you’d come to expect from a 5 star resort is available at Zamani Kempinski, including laundry and dry-cleaning, 24 hour room service, shoe shining and even a limousine service! |

| Mapenzi Beach Club All-inclusive package holiday with all activities on a quiet stretch of beach. Mapenzi Beach Club is located on the north-eastern side of Zanzibar on a great stretch of beach. There are several advantages to staying here. Firstly, Mapenzi offers an all-inclusive rate (one of the few on Zanzibar not solely targeted at the Italian market). Since all your meals, drinks (including alcohol) and selected water sports are included in our rate, you don't have to spend your holiday worrying about the bill at the end. Built in traditional Zanzibari style, with a huge thatched makuti (palm-thatch) roof and coral walls, Mapenzi Beach Club is an enormous hotel spread out on a sloping hill. The gardens are lush, full of tall palm trees and vibrant bougainvillea. The rooms are very comfortable and the food is fantastic. If you want to be right on the beach, we suggest booking a seafront cottage in the first row. If these aren't available, the next row along offers slithers of a sea view through the palm trees. |

Recall the ultra-stunning Palm Hotel situated in the sea of Dubai Well, the same company responsible for that magnificent development, IFA Hotels and Resorts, has applied their ingenious minds to Zanzibar. A lot of money has been spent on this resort, previously known as the Protea Hotel Zanzibar, and the refurbishments and redesigns -although nowhere as near as ambitious as the Palm (after all this is quiet and peaceful Zanzibar)- are all for the better. The Fairmont Beach Hotel and Resort, situated on the island’s northeast coast, has a number of attractive draw cards. It is not only close to one of Zanzibar's top dive sites, the Mnemba Atoll, but it has one of the best scuba diving schools, called Urchins, on the island. Urchins is run by a seasoned diver called Cathy who has a wealth of underwater experience. Besides exploring the underwater spectacle of Mnemba, Urchins offers trips to Leven Bank, Bawe Island, Prison Island, Menai Bay, The Great Northerner Wreck and Pange Sand Bank. where you can feel the soothing caress of the gentle ocean breezes. Bar prices at the hotel are far more reasonable than a lot of others on the island, therefore suiting South African pockets. |

Shooting Star Zanzibar If you're after warm personalised service in an attractive, quiet and intimate setting (rather than a large resort-style hotel) head straight for Shooting Star. The place has a great feel about it, especially if you're looking for a peaceful spot to put your feet up and relax. We simply love it! This small, family-run guesthouse is situated on a hill near the fishing village of Kiwengwa and overlooks a magnificent stretch of white beach and dazzling blue ocean. The small makuti-roofed lodge is nestled in lovely well-tended gardens alive with birdsong. It only has 14 rooms, located a short distance from the lodge, so you'll never feel crowded. Its cliff-top setting means the ocean views are superb and all-encompassing. Access to the beach is via a short but steep flight of stairs (good for the calves). The welcome is warm with owner Elly going out of his way to make your stay pleasurable. Elly is Tanzanian and his wife Lesley is English. Elly has developed the guesthouse into its current form and takes great pride in sharing it with guests. There is an open-air restaurant and lots of chill-out and sun lounging areas with hammocks. It's been decorated with care using wooden furniture, African carvings, colourful cushions and local fabrics. The guestrooms are neat, clean and attractive. There are no disturbances here, no ringing phones or loud televisions, just the blissful sound and sights of the sea. |

Bluebay Beach Resort Bluebay is one of the newest and largest beach resorts on Zanzibar, able to accommodate more than 170 guests. Appropriately named, it's set along a beautiful stretch of idyllic palm-fringed white beach with deep-blue sea in the Kiwengwa area on the northeast coast. Unfortunately, the beauty of this region has attracted several other big resorts and Bluebay is almost in the middle of them. If you're a fan of luxury beach hotels, with all the bells and whistles, which could be located in any tropical setting this won’t faze you one bit. But, for the adventurous traveller, there are wilder, more remote lodgings to choose from on Zanzibar which are more in tune with local village life. |

The Sultan Sands Island Resort stands where, until 2006, the La Villa Beach Club stood - then a standard 20 roomed hotel next to the Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa. After its acquisition by the Group, it was transformed into a unique, one-of-a-kind holiday facility. It is now a resort befitting its name association with the fabled Omani Sultans who ruled the Zanzibar Islands for centuries. |

Matemwe Beach Village Matemwe Beach Village is a supremely cosy guestlodge located on the northeast coast of Zanzibar. It's within excellent proximity to Mnemba Island, which offers some of the best diving off mainland Zanzibar. The simple makuti-thatched lodge and bungalows are situated along a glorious strip of palm-fringed beach. The main lodge has comfortable living areas, friendly staff and a very sociable atmosphere generated by the type of clientele they attract. Gail, the lodge's South African manager, has put a lot of effort into upgrading the guesthouse and making it the special place it is today. Her success is evident in all the stylish touches and attention to detail, which give the place a great feel. All rooms are provided with cheery sunhats, beach baskets, khi-kois (local sarongs) and umbrellas - everything needed for a lazy day at the beach. We especially love the open-walled lounge with its colourful array of floor cushions and low tables, which overlook the ocean. Just the right spot to play games or swap travel stories with fellow guests. There's also a cosy pub in which to |

| Unguja Resort This small, superior hotel opened late in 2006. It is not a ‚"resort"‚ at all. We tried to persuade Ralph & Elies Kruidering to call it a ‚"lodge". However, ‚"lodge" in their homeland of Holland describes a low budget establishment, which Unguja certainly is not. With their three children, they and business partner Frans Fiegge moved to Zanzibar to develop an hotel which will meet the needs of people looking for a real Zanzibar experience, comfort, relaxation, personal service and rewarding snorkelling & diving. Location - Adjacent to the village of Kizimkazi on the southern tip of Zanzibar just over an hours drive from Stone Town and the Airport. It is very favourably located for swimming even at low tide as here the reef is close to shore so the tide does not recede as far as it does on other parts of Zanzibar. It is also located close to the dolphin viewing area. |

Karamba "Resort" Karamba is not a ‚"resort" at all. It is difficult to describe as, on the surface, it appears as a budget hotel, not having facilities such as airconditioning, swimming pool, etc. However, you do not have to scratch much below the surface to appreciate the friendliness of the well trained staff, the excellent food and the thought which goes in to making a stay rewarding and interesting. Location - Karamba is on the south coast in the fishing village of Kizimkazi, the setting-off point for dolphin viewing. The Hotel arranges dolphin trips at times which avoids sharing the experience with many other boats. |
